The Key Factors in Recovery – Exercise and Posture

  • Controlled, supervised exercise can help improve blood flow to the muscles in the neck and restore muscle balance, in addition to helping the individual regain joint mobility.
  • A PT will create an exercise program that can be completed at home, or at work. The number of sets and repetitions is carefully planned, and the technique, range of motion, posture and breathing of all your movements is supervised by the physical therapist.
  • Once your pain level reduces, your PT will help you regain control of your muscles to reduce pain and get you back to full function.

Improving posture is an important component of treatment for chronic pain. Poor posture can lead to chronic neck pain.

  • Have you thought about the amount of time you are at your computer? Or even how you sit in your chair? Your physical therapist will evaluate your posture and help you improve it with simple stretching and strengthening movements.

When you are at home or at work, hot and cold packs and a neck pillow can also be helpful. Your physical therapist may decide to teach you simple techniques to promote muscle relaxation and help you reduce chronic neck pain.

Patient Testimonials

"I was having pain in my neck and all the way down my right arm with numbness in my hand.  I didn't feel like doing anything all summer long- hobbies, yardwork, gardening.  Everything was too uncomfortable and I didn't want to hurt more.  Now I feel like I have my life back and can do what I want and look forward to catching up.  One day after therapy I felt so good.  I pulled out all the dead plants in the front yard flowerbeds to clean things up.  It was so invigorating!  I thought I was going to be "broken" forever, for the rest of my life, but with this physical therapy I feel great and hopeful for the future!  I would tell everyone to go this route!  Thanks to everyone who helped me heal and enjoy life again!  It didn't even take that long!"

"What do you look for in a physical therapy provider? I would say, competency in their field, current in their field to include the most recent innovations and concern in regard to my recovery. Certainly some level of success...the most that can be attained under the circumstances of the injury. I am confident that all of this is present at Idaho Spine and Sports Physical Therapy...but, so very much more. Their flexibility in meeting your needs, follow up to ensure satisfaction, personal care to your needs and their unique ability to make a "patient" feel like a returning friend. Their relationship with their co-workers in addition to the way they approach each individual makes you feel extremely welcomed and at ease. I don't know what else I could ask for from my physical therapist...do you? Honestly, so very very happy that I made the right choice in making my journey back to health and mobility. Thank you to Idaho Spine and Sports Physical Therapy for all you do. I could not be happier."   - Katherine Sakamoto

"Before coming to Idaho Spine & Sports Physical Therapy, I constantly suffered from lumbar back spasms caused by Scoliosis. I had come to the thought that this pain would be habitual, and always affect my everyday life. However, I was quickly proven wrong by the amazing staff at Idaho Spine & Sports. As my visits progressed, I had less and less episodes of pain as my lower back muscles were strenghened and equalized. As an 18 year old, I could finally do anything I wanted by the end of my visits because of the hard work of both the staff and myself. Coming here has enabled me to return to a pain-free life style. The people here were always warm, welcoming, and made me feel like family. I would recommend nowhere else. Always remember that as long as you work hard, do your exercises at home , and keep a positive attitude, your condition will get better!"   - Shaundra Herrud

"About a year after I broke my C1 vertebrae, my neck muscles were in pain. I found myself laying down in class, not out of laziness, but because of pain. It was hard to concentrate on my work because looking down caused strain and muscle tightness. Additionally, looking up was a real pain in the neck. After my second appointment at ISSPT, I noticed how loose my neck muscles were already. It was the first time I had felt relief from the pain I had been experiencing for the past year. Each visit I left with that same feeling. It was liberating. I also enjoyed how each member of the staff makes a point of getting to know their patients. I would recommend this clinic to anyone who wants to leave their injuries behind them and be introduced to a new level of strength and comfort."   - David Nielsen

"Before beginning my PT here, I had been experiencing headaches at least twice a week. I also had significant pain and stiffness in my neck and lower back and shoulders caused from osteoarthritis. Although my range of motion wasn't too bad, my pain was. After starting my PT, I've only had one headache and the pain in my neck, shoulders, and lower back has gotten so much better. The difference this therapy has made in my quality of life is beyond amazing. The staff here are so wonderful. I know the most important thing when working with any person in the medical field, is their knowledge and expertise. For me, another important aspect is their proverbial "bedside manner". Everyone here has treated me like family. Not only are they fantastic professional caregivers, they are kind and compassionate  people as well. I have recommended Idaho Spine and Sport to my friends and family. Saying thank you doesn't seem to be enough for me to convey how much you mean to me. P.S. I'll miss Country Thursday!"   - Stacey Cowan

"I came in with my neck completely painful. I couldn't move or turn my neck. Since the 1st treatment, I started getting better. I tried all the therapists and they were each different in their own way. Now I am feeling much better! I will always recommend ISSPT to my friends and family!"   - Susana Mendoza

"Thank you guys and girls for the help. When I came to you after suffering an auto accident, I couldn't raise my arms without pain. I had really bad headaches. Now, after 14 visits my headaches are gone and my strength and range of motion have been restored. I feel better than I did even before the accident. Again, thank you to the entire staff. You have been great;making each visit productive and fun."   - Erin Hanson

"Before I started physical therapy I had a lot of pain in my neck, head, and back. From my first day til now I have improved a lot. My neck isn't as stiff, my back isn't consistently hurting, and I have less headaches. I have enjoyed all the staff here, they are very welcoming and have been very helpful in my progress. I would highly recomment anyone to come here and I'm going to miss them."   - Brandy Gardner

"Very painful neck at the C-1 and C-2 vertibrae. Extreme pain while sleeping and was turning every couple of hours to get comfortable. Strength excercises have helped tremendously. I tend to do some of them while sitting, driving, etc. It is great reinforcement for me to continue to get the intermittent relief. I believe this department has definitely been more thorough than a couple of other therapy departments I have attended for my back treatment. I would definitely recommend a person to come here. Thanks a lot!  - Jane R. Holman

"Before I came to physical therapy, I had trouble with my neck and shoulder to the point that I had trouble falling asleep, but now I feel much better! Thank you to the team of Idaho Physical Therapy. They had helped me and showed me how to exercise and I can now fall asleep much faster. So thank you ISSPT. I give you a five star!" - Orna Levitt

"Coming into Idaho Spine and Sports Physical Therapy I was in such severe pain, I could not handle simple touch to the back of my head and neck. I have been through several prominent physical therapists in the area and all of them gave up on helping me.  This is crushing and hard to recover from.  Ashley promised from day one she would not give up on me. She held true to her promise.  Prior to my TBI I was an extremely active person and I just wanted to return to that.  The first time I put my head up to a cervical machine I instantly started crying in pain. A month later I tried it again and I almost threw up when I pushed back on it.  About six weeks later, I was able to start using it.  I am currently at 10 pounds! That is a huge success since I have had no improvement with other PT's in the last 2 1/2 years! The team also has helped direct me to get my eyes checked to see why I am so dizzy.  This has pushed me to get evaluated and my next step is eye therapy.  The most significant improvement I have experienced in my personal life is the ability to get up, get dressed in the morning in 45 minutes,+0 like I used to. I do not need 2-3 breaks!! Ashely, Kevin and Megan have been amaing supporters! lso thanks to alex and Todd. I would highly recommend ISSPT to anyone."-Monica Davis

"I appreciate all the help Alex and Todd have given me. They were both very professional and provided me with excellent treatment that led to great improvement with the pain in my neck.  I will come back for any future treatment and will highly recommend Idaho Spine and Sports Physical Therapy to my family and friends.  I appreciate the kind and welcoming environment. Again, I would like to say that Alex and Todd were the best and I will miss seeing them every Wednesday." -Doug Allen
